The Leaver File

About this site

Fifty notes on what a departure has to produce, written for the people who actually have to produce it: HR and people teams, payroll, line managers taking a process through for the first time, and the operations and IT people who find out on the day.

What it covers

The record that has to exist before anybody is told. The shape of a fair process, and the parts of it that are the same everywhere. The last working day — property, access, accounts, handover, announcement. Final pay: accrued leave, notice, expenses, deductions, timing. What follows the person out of the door: references, restrictions, confidentiality, settlement. The file that is left behind and how long it is kept. And what a year of exits looks like read together.

What it leaves out

What the law requires in any particular place. Those answers differ by jurisdiction, by sector and by agreement, they change, and they are a question for somebody qualified where you are. This collection is about arriving at that person with the right question and the right documents, which is most of the work and the part nobody writes about.

About the figures

Every number on this site is an illustration of what one organisation recorded for itself, and is labelled as such. None of them is a benchmark, a survey result or a statement of what any rule requires.
